Electronic Filters

About
Electronic Filters, otherwise known as Electrostatic Filters, are unique from other particulate filters in that they are wired. Electricity is actually fed into a layer of the filter creating a static charge. This static electricity attracts particulate matter and holds it. Think of rubbing a balloon on your head and then hold it a few inches away. What happens? Your hair will stand on end directed towards the balloon. This is the basic premise behind the Electrostatic Filter. The small electrical field creates a trap for any particles that happen across its path.

Installation
Most residential Electrostatic Filters come in a standard size that can be fitted where your current filter resides. A control wire must be connected from this location to the indoor section of Heating & Cooling system. The actual amount of voltage for residential Electrostatic Filters is 24 volts, not really dangerous but enough that safety should be remembered when changing your filter. Upon installation, the most common issue a homeowner experiences, besides less dust, will be a slight sound from their filter. The electric charge can create a type of hum and an occasional snap, as dust is captured and contained.

Maintenance
Electronic Filters are made up of different layers connected to a rigid frame which also houses the electronic interface. Different manufacturers have different materials for these layers but they all follow a pretty basic make up; the metallic layers that actually hold the electrical charge and a spongy material to hold on to the dust once it has been attracted. Instead of just throwing out a filter once it gets dirty, an Electrostatic Filters is removed, disassembled and cleaned manually. Once again, different manufactures may recommend different methods of cleaning bust most recommend a mild cleaning solution and gentle rinse. Once it dries the layers can be put back together, inserted into the frame and returned to grill or filter cabinet.
